Golden handcuffs typically refer to specific financial instruments, such as stock options, deferred compensation, or pension vesting schedules, designed by employers to increase the cost of departure. The golden cage describes the broader psychological and financial condition, one that can develop without any deliberate retention strategy, simply through the accumulation of a lifestyle that requires the income to sustain it.
