Ford's five-dollar day was not just a raise. It came with a surveillance department that investigated how workers lived, and two men built and ran the system that decided who deserved the money.

In January 1914, Henry Ford announced that Ford Motor Company would pay a minimum wage of five dollars per day, more than double the prevailing industrial wage. The announcement generated international attention and was widely celebrated as an act of corporate generosity. The condition was less publicized: only workers deemed to be living a sufficiently orderly life would qualify for the full rate. To determine eligibility, Ford created the Sociological Department.

John R. Lee, a Ford executive, organized and initially led the Sociological Department, which employed approximately fifty investigators at its peak. These investigators visited workers' homes, often unannounced, and evaluated their domestic arrangements. Workers were assessed on cleanliness, thrift, sobriety, marital stability, and adherence to what Ford's management considered proper living standards. Immigrant workers were expected to attend English language classes. Workers who drank excessively, gambled, maintained unsanitary conditions, or had domestic arrangements that did not meet the company's standards could be denied the full wage.

Reverend Samuel S. Marquis, an Episcopal minister and acquaintance of Ford's, took over the department around 1916 and renamed aspects of its mission. Marquis attempted to reframe the department's work as genuinely pastoral rather than coercive, and he later wrote about his experiences in Henry Ford: An Interpretation, published in 1923. He eventually resigned, reportedly disillusioned with Ford's increasing authoritarianism and the gap between the department's stated mission and its actual function as a tool of social control.

The Sociological Department was disbanded in the early 1920s, replaced by the more overtly coercive Service Department under Harry Bennett. The five-dollar day and its conditions represented an early and explicit version of a corporate assumption that persists in subtler forms: that an employer's interest in a worker's productivity extends legitimately into their personal life, their habits, their character, and their choices outside the workplace.
