Tangping
Luo Huazhong's original post described two years of minimal consumption and intermittent work following his departure from a factory job. He framed lying flat not as defeat but as a philosophical position, a conscious rejection of the relentless striving that Chinese society demanded of its young. The post resonated because it named what millions were already doing or considering. It gave a vocabulary to the gap between official narratives of upward mobility and the lived reality of 996 work schedules, soaring housing costs, and credentials that no longer guaranteed stable employment.
The Chinese government's response was swift. State media outlets including Xinhua and People's Daily condemned tangping as shameful, urging young people to strive and contribute. Luo's original post was censored, and online discussion of the concept was repeatedly suppressed. The intensity of the official reaction, directed at a forum post by a single unemployed man, suggested that the concept had touched something the system considered structurally threatening.
Tangping followed sang (2016) and preceded bailan ("let it rot," 2022), forming a chronological sequence of Chinese youth vocabulary that traced an escalation from performative apathy to philosophical withdrawal to nihilistic acceptance. Each term represented a further step in the disengagement of a generation from the social contract their parents had accepted. By the time bailan emerged on Xiaohongshu, accumulating over two million references by mid-2022, the vocabulary had become a collective counter-narrative to the Party's discourse of aspiration and positive energy.
